Incumbent performs duties as Staff Accountant in the Finance Service of Central Texas Veterans Health Care System.
As an entry level Accountant position, the incumbent is expected to be familiar with accounting functions, principles, and regulations and how to apply them in practice.
The Accounting Section provides general ledger operations, cost accounting, financial statements and reports, and advisory services for all appropriations.
Incumbent must be knowledgeable of VA regulations, procedures, the interrelationship of accounts, procurement transactions and documents, accounting codes, account structures and procedures for entering, modifying, retrieving, and deleting information in the Financial Management System (FMS).
Assists or prepares monthly, quarterly, and/or annual reports.
Works closely with other accounting staff within the section, along with others within Finance Service to accomplish the various tasks necessary.
Maintains a high degree of familiarity with all aspects of the work accomplished by the accounting technicians in the section.
Provides routine daily guidance on the technical problems for accounting technicians in the section.
Compiles and prepares input data for monthly accruals which are not computer generated.
Monitors reports generated by FMS to identify and correct out of balance conditions, which may arise from a variety of sources, including the interface with Defense Finance Accounting System, transactions generated by the Data Processing Center in Austin, and station generated transactions or omissions.
Completes monthly reconciliations and reviews FMS output by verifying and comparing manual data and computer interfaced data to locate discrepancies, determine source of error and take corrective action on a timely basis.
Incumbent is responsible for participating in Accounting functions in the manner necessary to ensure that all performance measures that fall under the responsibility of the Accounting Section are met or exceeded.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
